PSA vs BGS vs CGC: Which Grading Service Is Right for Your Card?

Getting your cards professionally graded can dramatically increase their value — but only if you choose the right service. PSA, BGS (Beckett), and CGC are the three dominant names in card grading, and each has distinct strengths. Here's what you need to know before you submit.

Why Grade Your Cards at All?

Professional grading does three things: it authenticates the card, it assigns an objective condition grade on a 1–10 scale, and it seals the card in a tamper-proof case (called a "slab"). A graded card is easier to sell, commands a price premium, and protects the card long-term.

That said, grading only makes financial sense for cards where the grade premium exceeds the grading cost. A bulk common isn't worth grading. A vintage Charizard, a pristine alt-art, or a key rookie card? Absolutely.

PSA — The Gold Standard for Resale

PSA is the most recognized grading company in the world for trading cards. If you're planning to sell on eBay or through a card shop, a PSA-graded card will almost always generate the most buyer interest and the highest sale price.

PSA Grading Scale

• PSA 10 (Gem Mint): Perfect card — no flaws under magnification. Commands 3–10x raw card value.
• PSA 9 (Mint): Minor imperfections only visible under magnification. Still a significant premium over raw.
• PSA 8 (Near Mint-Mint): Light surface wear, slight off-centering. Modest premium.
• PSA 7 and below: Reduced premiums. Often not worth the grading cost unless the card is very valuable.

Best for: Vintage Pokémon (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil), key sports rookies, mainstream collectibles where name recognition matters most.

BGS — The Most Rigorous Grade

Beckett is the toughest grader. They assign four subgrades — centering, corners, edges, and surface — and the overall grade is the lowest subgrade. This strict system means BGS 10 "Pristine" and the legendary BGS 10 "Black Label" (all four subgrades must be 10) are extremely rare and command massive premiums.

What Makes BGS Special

• Subgrades give you (and buyers) a detailed breakdown of the card's condition
• BGS 9.5 is considered equivalent to a PSA 10 by many collectors
• A BGS 10 Black Label is one of the most coveted grades in the hobby

Best for: Collectors who want the most detailed grade, premium modern cards where the Black Label is attainable, and buyers who prioritize condition transparency.

CGC — The Fast-Growing Challenger

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) started in comics grading and expanded into trading cards. They've built a strong reputation in the Pokémon community specifically and typically offer faster turnaround and competitive pricing compared to PSA and BGS.

CGC Advantages

• Often faster turnaround than PSA, especially at lower service tiers
• Strong in modern Pokémon, One Piece, and MTG
• CGC 10 Pristine is their top grade — increasingly respected in the market

Best for: Modern Pokémon, One Piece TCG, MTG, and collectors who want faster service without sacrificing quality.

What Does Grading Cost?

All three companies offer tiered pricing based on card value and turnaround time. Expect to pay $20–$50+ per card at standard service levels, with express options running significantly higher. Factor in shipping both ways. The math only works if the card's graded value meaningfully exceeds your total cost.

Current turnaround times range from 30 days to 6+ months depending on service level and demand. Always check each company's current estimates before submitting.
